Types of Windshield Wipers
If it's time for fresh windshield wiper blades, we've got all types – whatever fits your vehicle, preferences, and whatever your wallet's comfortable with. OEM wiper blades (Original Equipment Manufacturing) are the same as the ones that came with your car, so their performance is predictable and fitment is never an issue. And we've got premium aftermarket options that offer identical specs at better prices, and can often outperform the originals.
Michigan winters are brutal on regular all-season wipers; we have winter wiper blades that remain flexible in freezing temps and are wrapped in a rubber boot that prevents snow packing and ice formation. We also carry rear wiper blades for SUVs, hatchbacks, and wagons, so you can properly see out the back window in rain and snow.
Conventional Wiper Blades
Traditional wipers, common for older vehicles, have a tough steel frame with several pressure points to help spread the force evenly across the blade. For a lot of vehicles, this old-school design does the job just right, especially if you want budget wiper blades. The downside is that the framework can get clogged by ice and snow during winter.
Beam Wiper Blades
Those aerodynamic frameless wipers come as original equipment on most vehicles these days. No external frame; a single curved piece uses a spring steel core that applies even pressure across the entire blade. Beam-style blades resist ice buildup and don't lift off the glass at high speeds like conventional wipers can.
Hybrid Wiper Blades
The middle ground between standard and beam blades. They use a protective shell over a conventional-style frame, so you get a more rugged design than pure beam wipers and better aerodynamics and ice resistance than the conventional type.
Wiper Blade Materials
Most people shop windshield wipers by size and price and that's fair. But knowing what your car wiper blades are made of helps you make a smarter buying decision. The squeegee material can make the difference between nice & clear glass and smearing. That's especially the case here in Detroit, where road salt and sudden temperature swings can break down cheaper compounds in no time.
Natural Rubber Wiper Blades
The traditional material that most standard, affordable wiper blades are made of. They do the job but degrade faster in extreme sun and cold than synthetics, so they'll need replacing more often in harsh Detroit weather.
Synthetic Rubber & Advanced Compounds
Higher-grade car wiper blades use synthetic rubber compounds or blends that don't crack and harden as easily. Some premium blades are coated in graphite or Teflon for a cleaner, quieter, squeak-free wipe.
Silicone Wiper Blades
They are known for lasting longer and staying flexible in extreme temps. Another perk is that silicone can leave a water-repelling effect on the windshield, which helps visibility in rain.
Silicone vs Rubber Wiper Blades – Which Are Better?
Silicone blades are pricier, but you can get 2x and sometimes even 3x the service life out of them compared to regular rubber ones. Silicone holds up in brutal cold and heat, so these blades stay soft and flexible no matter what Michigan weather throws at them. They stay quieter longer and don't develop that chattering or squeaking that rubber blades get as they age.
What Size Windshield Wipers Do I Need?
This is the question we at Holbrook Auto Parts hear most often from people who walk through our doors to buy windshield wipers. If your wipers are skipping or leaving streaks, it's not always just the rubber. Sometimes the wrong size or wrong style doesn't press evenly on the glass. So here's what to keep in mind when picking the right wiper blade size:
- Driver-side and passenger-side wiper blades are often different lengths; most cars have a longer blade on the driver's side.
- The easiest way to find your wiper blade size is to check your vehicle's owner's manual.
- You can measure your existing blades from end to end, but make sure you're measuring the rubber blade itself, not the entire wiper arm assembly.
We have all common sizes in stock and when you come in or call ahead, we can help you confirm the correct fit for your car, truck, or SUV.
Shop by Wiper Blade Size
If you already know the correct size, getting the right windshield wipers for your car is a breeze. Pick your length and grab a great deal.

Windshield Wiper Connector Types
Before you buy wiper blades, take 10 seconds to look at the end of your wiper arm where it meets the blade. Types of wiper blades connectors are pretty recognizable. Most modern blades come with multiple adapters to fit different hooks, pins, and bayonet-style connections, but older vehicles or certain imports might need specific connectors.
How it attaches / releases
Hook Style (J-Hook / U-Hook)
Wiper arm ends in a curved “J” shape
Blade slides onto the hook and clicks in
Flat arm with a small button on top near the connection
Press the button, slide the blade off
Pin Style (Side Pin / Top Pin)
A small metal pin goes through the connector
Pin holds blade in place. Release varies by design
Older vehicles, a lot of European & some Asian makes
Connector has two little squeeze tabs on the sides
Pinch tabs, then slide blade off
Some European & newer models
Straight, flat metal arm slides into the blade (like a tongue into a slot)
Slides in and locks with a clip
Older vehicles, some trucks
If you're not 100% sure, snap a photo of the connector or bring the old blade into any Holbrook Auto Parts store near you. We'll match the right size and connector type so you leave with exact-fit wiper blades the first time.
Signs of Bad Windshield Wiper Blades
A lot of folks drive around with worn-out windshield wipers, then the first real downpour hits I-75 and suddenly they can't see lane lines. Don't be that person. If any of this sounds like your situation, it's time for windshield wipers replacement and we're here to help you with that:
- Windshield wipers streaking – you're getting that foggy smear that never clears.
- Squeaking or chattering – this is usually poor contact with the glass or the rubber's drying out.
- Wipers skipping – instead of smooth wipes, they jump across the windshield.
- You're seeing worse performance in rain or snow – Detroit slush and salt spray will expose weak car wipers quick.
- Bent or damaged frame – the blade can't maintain proper contact with the windshield.
- Visible cracks or chunks missing from the rubber – those blades are finished, get a fresh set.
Even if your wipers are visually okay, if it's been more than a year since you replaced them, they're probably not working as well as they could be. Fresh blades make a huge difference in visibility, especially in heavy rain. Don't wait until you can't see, pick up new windshield wipers nearby at a Holbrook Auto Parts store in Detroit.
