How to Choose Quality Used Tires?

Are used tires safe? Is it worth buying them? Our customers ask these questions and we absolutely get it; it's okay to be skeptical about something that impacts your safety this much. Our answer is: yes, if they're inspected properly by professionals.

The techs at Holbrook have already done this for you. Before you buy used tires from us, they have to go through a full inspection. Here's what makes a used tire worth it and what we check:

  1. Tread depth; you want at least 5/32" remaining tread, better 6/32" or more (this is what we sell).
  2. Even wear. The wear pattern could tell you much about how the tire was maintained and how long it should last. If one side's worn more, it might have come off a car with alignment problems and it might not give you the service life you expect.
  3. Age – check the 4-digit DOT date code on the sidewall. The first two digits are the week, the last two are the year. So "2325" means 23rd week of 2025. Avoid anything older than 6 years.
  4. No damage – inspect for cuts, punctures, bulges, cracks, and signs of repairs. A small puncture repair in the tread is fine if done correctly. Sidewall repairs, multiple repairs, cracks, bulges mean walk away from that tire.
  5. Reputable brands. Their tires are typically well-built and last longer even when used. Big names like Michelin or Goodyear or a similar brand with decent tread are a good buy.

Used vs New Tires

Whether it's smart to invest in used tires is a fair concern. There are definitely times when this is a solid choice, like if you only need one tire replaced or you need a temporary solution. If you're on a budget, it's much better to have a used tire with good tread than to drive around on bald tread. Or, if the car's older and not worth much, it also might not make sense to put $600 worth of new tires on it. Whatever the case, our team makes sure the tires we offer have safe and solid tread and are ready to keep you moving no matter what these roads throw your way.

But when you need maximum tread life, a warranty, and the most predictable performance, you're better off with a new set. It makes sense if you drive a lot of highway miles or if your vehicle's new or valuable. New tires with fresh rubber and full tread depth are objectively safer than those previously used. Some AWD systems (especially Subaru, Audi, and others) require tires to be matched within 2/32" tread depth or you'll damage the drivetrain. Finding four used tires that match perfectly can be challenging.

Used Tires for Sale at Holbrook Stores

Used All-Season Tires

Good remaining tread provides decent traction in rain and light winter weather while saving you serious money compared to new. It's your definition of affordable rubber that works in most conditions.

Used All-Weather Tires

These give you better snow performance if you need something tougher than all-seasons. The three-peak mountain snowflake symbol means they meet actual winter traction standards even when purchased used.

Used Winter Tires

Your best choice for Michigan winters. Winter tires use special rubber compounds that stay flexible in freezing temps and tread patterns that bite into snow and ice. These features still work great in quality used snow tires. Our options will save you money while still having thousands of miles left in them.

Used Summer Tires

They work best when temps are up, with grippier rubber in the heat and tread patterns designed for dry and wet traction. If you swap to winter tires seasonally or drive a performance car in warmer months, you'll get excellent handling from these, at a lower price.

Used All-Terrain Tires

All the features you love – rugged looks, on-road comfort, and aggressive tread patterns for dirt, gravel, and light trail use – remain even when A/T tires are purchased used from us. We inspect them very carefully since this rubber often sees harder use than passenger car tires.

Used Performance Tires

If you're driving a sports sedan, tuned-up muscle car, or just something with a bit more vigor than your average grocery-getter, you need tires that can keep up. We have the rubber that gives you that much-needed grip at a smart price.

Used Mud-Terrain (MT) Tires

So your 4x4 sees deep mud, loose dirt, rocks, and trails. Our M/T tires will get you to the middle of nowhere and give your rig an aggressive look to match.

Used Off-Road Tires

If your weekend ventures include places like Holly Oaks ORV Park, you need the proper rubber. This selection covers everything from rugged all-terrains to hardcore mud-terrains, designed for trucks and SUVs that leave the pavement. We inspect them thoroughly since off-road use can be hard on tires.

Used Highway Tires

Designed for trucks and SUVs that rarely leave the pavement. You're getting on-road comfort, low noise, and decent usable tread at a fraction of the cost.

Used Run-Flat Tires

Many BMWs, MINIs, and other vehicles come factory-equipped with run-flats. When replacement time comes, we've got replacement options that won't blow up your budget.

Buy Used Tires from Leading Brands

When buying used tires is on your radar, the brand name is one of your strong indicators of quality. Top manufacturers use better rubber compounds and build stronger internals. You may not have full tread, but you're getting the quality that was built into that tire from day one. You can't go wrong with major brands like Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Continental, Pirelli, and other top sellers. Their tires hold up better, ride smoother, and give you more dependable traction even after they've been driven on. Looking for used car tires near you that come from trusted brands? Come in and tell us what you're driving and we'll show you the solid options from big names that we have in stock.

FAQ

How much are used tires?

In Detroit, most used tires for cars, SUVs, and light trucks typically run from $30 to $120 per tire. Larger sizes, more premium brands, and higher tread depth take the price toward the higher end of that range. It's common for smaller passenger car sizes to cost around $40-$80, while bigger SUV & light truck sizes are often $50-$100 or a bit more.

How long do used tires last?

A lot of used tires offer around 5,000 to 25,000 miles of remaining tread life. The biggest factors here are how much tread is left when you buy them and how you drive and maintain your vehicle. 6/32" tread might last 15,000 miles or as little as 8,000 miles, depending on your driving & vehicle maintenance habits. Uneven wear caused by bad alignment, worn shocks, etc. kills tire life fast.

Should I buy used tires?

Yes, many drivers are okay with them, especially those who need a single tire or are looking for an affordable solution. If you're worried used tires only come off old beaters, that's not how it usually works. Someone upgrades wheels and tires and ditches old rubber, which might be perfectly good. A vehicle might get traded in or totaled with good tires still on it, or a lease return might come in early. So tread depth is still good enough.
