FAQ’s
How long does an oil change take?
About 30 minutes for a standard oil change. That's drain, filter swap, refill, and a quick under-hood check. Some vehicles take a bit longer - 45-60 minutes if there are skid plates to remove or the filter's tucked in a tight spot. Trucks and SUVs with undercarriage protection sometimes need extra time.
What kind of oil change do I need?
Depends on your vehicle. Most cars built after 2015 need full synthetic oil - it's what the manufacturer specifies. Older vehicles usually run fine on conventional oil, and some fall in between with a synthetic blend. We use the right viscosity and spec for your vehicle.
What do I need for an oil change?
Just your car and about 30 minutes. We provide everything else - the right motor oil and filter your engine needs. For a quick oil change near you, stop by our Holbrook Auto Repair Center location on 10 W McNichols Rd, Highland Park, MI and we'll take care of everything.
What happens if you don't change your oil?
Skipping oil changes can lead to costly engine trouble. In the worst case scenario, damage gets bad enough to cause a full engine replacement. That's because oil breaks down and collects contaminants over time (soot, carbon particles, moisture, metal shavings, unburned fuel, acids, even dust from a dirty or leaky air filter). It stops doing its two big jobs – lubricating and cooling. Old, dirty oil turns into varnish, then thick sludge that clogs tiny passages. Your engine literally starts grinding itself down and overheats. We've seen it – people try to save a few bucks by stretching their oil way too long, then end up facing repair bills in the thousands. Don't let that be you! Schedule your oil change.
Will my car tell me when I need an oil change?
Yes – a newer car will tell you, but you shouldn't wait for the warning.
Most newer cars (2010 and up) have an oil life monitor. It watches your starts, idling, temps, and miles, then shows a % of oil life or a “Service/Oil Change” message. 15% oil life means you're getting close – time to find the nearest oil change shop.
Why should you change it earlier than the monitor suggests? Detroit driving is more like “severe service”: short trips on Woodward, winter cold starts, long idles, towing, dusty jobsites. All of this breaks down your oil faster than the system expects.
Older cars just have a basic oil pressure warning light, and if that comes on, you're already in trouble – your oil pressure is dangerously low. Signs you need an oil change ASAP:
- Oil looks thick/black and gritty on the dipstick
- Ticking or knocking on cold start
- Burning oil smell, blue smoke, or frequent top-offs
Our techs can't stress this enough: don't wait until these signs show up. Always target safe maintenance intervals. And it's smart to check your oil manually once a month. Pop the hood and pull the dipstick: fresh oil is amber or light brown. If it's black and gritty, or if you're low, don't wait for the light – get it changed.
What do we do with oil after oil change?
We recycle it responsibly. It's EPA-required, and it's the right thing to do. You can feel good knowing your old oil isn't ending up in a landfill or contaminating Detroit's water supply.
