FAQ
What are brake pads and rotors?
Brake pads are what actually create the friction to stop your vehicle. They press against the rotors (the big metal discs behind your wheel spokes) and that clamping force and friction slow you down. Over time, pad compound wears down – that's just how they work. The material literally gets ground away every time you hit the brakes. Constant heat and pressure do their thing, and eventually, there's not enough pad left. Rotors are tougher but they can develop deep grooves or have uneven wear that causes vibration or pulsation.
How often to replace brake pads and rotors?
Most pads last 30,000-70,000 miles depending on your driving style and the type of pads. City driving with lots of stops wears them faster. If you're noticing squealing, grinding, or longer stopping distances, have them checked even if you're not at that mileage yet. Rotors typically last longer than pads, many drivers can get one to two pad changes per set of rotors.
Can I just replace brake pads and not rotors?
Yes! If your rotors are still in good shape, you can absolutely just replace the pads. Sometimes you can resurface the rotors if they're still within spec. But if they're too thin, worn down, or warped (causing vibration), you'll want to replace both pads and rotors together for the best performance and safety.
How much are brake pads and rotors?
For most daily drivers and small SUVs, expect to pay around $40–$120 for a set of brake pads per axle (front or rear), depending on the brand and material. A pair of rotors (front only or rear only) typically runs $80–$250 or more. So if you're replacing just the front brake pads and rotors or just the rear ones, parts typically range from $120 to $350 or more, depending on whether it's a basic setup or something upgraded. Trucks, performance cars, and European vehicles can bump the price higher.
